How To Coach the Clippers

With the Clips down by 15, DJ gets his 4th foul and Reggie Miller says “how about Doc leaving DJ in with 4 fouls.  That’s gutsy coaching.”  Huh?  At that point, Doc had nothing to lose and it is most certainly not gutsy coaching.  The gutsy coach move would have been to leave DJ in after his third foul when it was a four point game.  As Mrs. Clipanswerman said, “Why not leave DJ in and keep it close and then if he fouls out, you depend on CP to win it?” Exactly right.  This unwritten rule that coaches follow of always taking a player out at the third foul in the first half is ridiculous.  It depends on the circumstances.  You’re up 3-1 and you’re on the road.  That’s a ‘roll the dice’ situation and to me, quite simply, the odds of winning the game are better if DJ is in there.  I said it after game 2, I’ll say it again – DJ playing only 24 minutes (he ended up with 4 fouls, you get 6) is inexcusable.  It’s bad coaching.

Hawes played well – by his standards, but the combination of Hawes and Austin let the game get out of control quickly.  I got some comments on my ‘Daddy Issues’ post after Austin played well this weekend.  Well, if you’re keeping score – and you should – because one really bad game equals one really good game – Austin was horrible yesterday.  19 minutes, one assist.  Discombobulated offensive sets with him ‘running’ the point and a multitude of layup bricks resulting in easy scores on the other end yesterday.  Doc is depending on Austin way too much.  For the record, Barnes was horrible yesterday, too.

One other thing that gets my dander up.  I can’t stand it when a coach (i.e. Dumbleavy) calls a play at the end of the game that hasn’t been used all game.  Similarly, all season long when teams Hack DJ, we haven’t adjusted our game plan.  Now all of a sudden, Doc’s apt to pull DJ at certain points in response to Hacking.  Why the sudden change in strategy? (Answer: Doc’s panicking.)  We also haven’t Hacked the other team once all year.  Why are we occasionally doing it now?  (Really, hacking Corey Brewer when you’re down by 18?)  Memo to Doc:  If we’re going to go down, lets go down with the guys who got us here.  That’s DJ, not Austin.  Thursday is a ‘must-win’ game.  DJ, Blake and CP need to play 42 minutes each.  Use the timeouts to get them rest.   Don’t save your timeouts so you can allow Houston’s defense to get set while you diagrams a play.  Limit Hawes’ and Austin’s minutes.  Don’t worry about the other team hacking.  And don’t use the Hack strategy.  It’s a loser’s mentality.

In short, how do you coach the Clippers?  You don’t overcoach and over think.  You listen to Mrs. Clipanswerman and you put in your best players and play them for as long as the rules allow and they can physically play.  Then, get out of the way.

    Seriously?

The hacking on Brewer was straight up idiotic. He was 74% on the season. 45% in the playoffs on a very small sample, I hate those desperation moves

OK, I have to elaborate. Several things:

    1. Calm down.
    2. LOL
    3. You could see last night coming 1,379 miles away. A desperate team coming off a blow out loss, on the brink of elimination, playing in front of the home crowd…The Rockets were not going to lose. They wanted it more.
    4. The Clippers didn’t play with any sense of urgency because they didn’t need to. They played a lazy game, jacking up threes and not hustling at all.
    5. Are you seriously trying to pin this on Doc, Austin and Hawes? Really? Dude, nobody played well other than Griffin and Paul. It’s posts like this that make me wonder if you would take being right over the Clips winning a title.
    6. Game 6 is a must win? Please. I’m pretty sure there will be another game if the Clips lose tomorrow night.
    7. Had DJ picked up his fourth foul in the second quarter, you would have criticized Doc for playing him. “Even Mrs. Clipanswerman knows you don’t play a guy with three fouls in the second half. That’s Coaching 101.”
    8. Hindsight is 20/20. Always.
    9. Doc took DJ out because there wasn’t enough time for them to comeback with him hitting 50% of his free throws. He hacked Rockets players because it was the best way to get the ball back since nobody was playing defense.
    10. The Clippers are clearly the better team. They’ll win tomorrow and, if not, they’ll win Sunday. They’re not going to end the season losing three games in a row to an inferior opponent. They won’t blow it. So relax.

      1. I’m never calm about the Clippers.
      2. LOL is what someone writes when they have nothing original to say.
      3. Then why did you watch the game? Cliches like ‘they wanted it more’ are ludicrous. If you want that, read Twitter and listen to Sports Radio. If you want real analysis, keep reading The Clipanswerman.
      4. Jacked up threes because DJ wasn’t in there. But some truth to this.
      5. Uh, yeah, that was on Doc entirely. Would we have won if DJ played 40 minutes? I have no idea.
      6. Yes.
      7. Nope. I said it at the time I was watching and it’s a point I’ve made over and over again for years. If you question my honesty on that point, you really shouldn’t bother reading my blog. Go read an average fan’s analysis.
      8. Again, didn’t say we would have won, and I didn’t make any arguments I haven’t been making for months.
      9. Terrible.
      10. Clearly? The two teams won the same number of games and Houston’s second best player missed half the season. You’re a Clipper fan, I get it.

    11. I need to do a better job of proofreading. “Even Mrs. Clipanswerman knows you don’t play a guy with three fouls in the second quarter. That’s Coaching 101.”

    1. OK.
    2. LOL is what someone writes when they’re laughing at you.
    3. Why wouldn’t I watch the game? I haven’t seen real analysis from you in 15 years.
    4. They were jacking up threes from the start.
    5. LOL.
    6. I guess you won’t need to watch Game 7 if it happens.
    7. That very well may be. If you provide an example or if someone vouches for you, I’ll take it back.
    8. OK.
    9. The effort was terrible. Not much the coach can do about that.
    10. It’s playoff time. Regular season stats go out the window. The Clippers have been the superior team in this series and the postseason as a whole. When they play hard and smart, the Rockets can’t beat them.

You’ve been reading my analysis for fifteen years. That speaks for itself.

Easy there. I just came across this blog. Before that, it was the ESPN boards around 10 years ago, where you weren’t read so much as tolerated. I guess it’s possible that you said something of substance during the gap in between.

        • May 14, 2015 at 3:11 pm

Yeah, sure, you ‘came across’ this blog. Be honest. You looked for it and found it, because you enjoy reading the Clipanswerman. Keep reading.
